SUMMARY HISTORY OF THE 88 years old! Bewdley boasts one of the oldest tennis clubs in the county. After the First World War a number of tennis enthusiasts used to play on a private court at Netherton House (now the site of the High School's playing fields). Numbers outgrew that venue and Bewdley Tennis Club was founded in 1924 . The Chappells from Netherton House, Charlie Clarke, who gave the land and Alderman Frost, the club's first President, were among the early benefactors. The club has thrived on its present site for eight decades, and now has seven courts, all floodlit, which makes it one of the larger tennis clubs in Worcestershire: a far cry from tho original two grass courts in 1924 (see above!). None of this would have been possible without a strong tradition of voluntary work from members, which still continues today. Another picture of considerable interest to many members is the membership potrait taken for the 50 years celebration in 1974. We hope to to provide an identification key to all present so if anyone can identify indivduals please pass the information on to Tony, Phil or Tim.
